This realization caused Robert to become overwhelmed with emotion and at which time he began to weep. As the tears were coming down his cheeks, he told me that, for the first time, he realized what he wanted from his father or believed he got from his father, in regards to bonding or physical affection, never really happened. For Robert, knowing the truth about his caretakers and their inability to contribute to him on an social/emotional level.
I started in on his relationship with his father and asked him was his relationship with his father truly what he believed it to be. My reason for asking about his father/son relationship was because something had to be bothering Robert in order for him to drink so heavily. Finally, a breakthrough, Robert confessed that his father never reached out to him on an emotional level throughout his childhood.
