As I began my search for the answer as to why these individuals began to abuse drugs and alcohol for an extended length of time and the emotion that was attached to their excessive drug use, I began to notice a pattern of the “fatherless children.” I didn’t realize the detrimental impact an absent father had on a child, especially a boy, until I began to listen to their childhood stories. These fatherless children discussed how much they longed for the attention and influence of their male role models. I can honestly say 85% to 95% of these fatherless children, on Probation, did not know their father, never connected with their father, or was physically, psychologically and emotionally abused by their father.
