What Makes a “Bully?” The Week of October 9th Make friends with someone you don’t know at school

As we have heard in the local and national news, social media, or at the workplace the word “bullying” causes one to pause. It is a word that can bring back memories of powerlessness and hopelessness. It is a word that creates a cause for concern. For me, I am about the origins of something. Why does something begin? So, I ask the question about this topic, “What makes a bully?” “How are bullies created?” What is the purpose of bullying?”

As with any behavior, beliefs, or values, there is a high probability they are learned from childhood experiences. Other beliefs that are learned from home are racism, sexism, materialism, lookism, and the list goes on and on. Because of those experiences, a child will create specific survival mechanisms in order to survive specific situations that are threatening or life-diminishing. In regards to bullying, I have observed, from my experiences, the bully is repeating the abusive behavior that was done to him on to individuals who will accept the behavior as he was forced to do with the caretaker. In other words, the bully is empowering himself, tragically, by repeating what his caretaker did him.

Now that we know the individual who displays “bully” behavior is learned from childhood, the next question is how does bullying end? Well, that can come in a variety of ways. First, when a person stands up or confronts a bully, more often than not, the bully backs down and fears to confront that former victim again. Remember, the bully is a fragile human being trying to disempower others because he was disempowered by his caretakers.

If you’ve ever been isolated from others at school or you were new at school and it took time to make friends, you know what it feels like to be left out. Or even if you were never isolated, imagine how it would feel.

Make friends with someone at school who you don’t know. You probably wish someone had done that for you. Be a leader. Take action and don’t let anyone at school be in isolation.
